  4. 1985 and within months, on the death of
  5. President Neves, became head of state.
  6. Despite earlier involvement with the
  7. repressive military regime, he and his party
  8. won a convincing victory in the 1986 general
  9. election. In Dec 1989, Ferdinando Collor de
  10. Mello of the Party for National
  11. Reconstruction was elected to succeed Sarney
  12. in Mar 1990.
